With the help of a 2024 grant from the Columbia County Cultural Coalition, the CCMA was able to scan and preserve some of the history of the Columbia County Oregon State University Extension Service. Beginning in 1918 and continuing into the 1980s, the local Extension Service prepared annual reports on its community activities related to farming and forestry development. There is detailed information on crops grown, early use of fertilizers, disease and insect issues, livestock training, and the development of the diking districts for agriculture. Many 4-H and Home Economics activities are detailed as well. In many cases, Columbia County residents who participated in these activities are named and sometimes pictured.
Some of the reports contain great period pictures featuring agricultural, forestry, home economics and 4-H activities. Those images were scanned separately and are available here as well.
In many cases, the documents are tightly bound and were typed using carbon paper and onionskin paper making the scanning process difficult and the results less than perfect. However, each issue can be searched and almost all text is legible. There is an index below which identifies the assigned number for each year. In some cases there are multiple issues for the same year because they were spit by topic, e.g. Agriculture and Home Economics were separate in some years, and combined in others. The index also notes whether there are pictures in the individual issues. This can be helpful if you are looking for good quality images. Please note that the pictures are not captioned, so explanatory information must be obtained from the original document. Unfortunately, there are some years without any publications available.
There are other pictures and documents from the Extension Service that were not part of the original project, but are included to ensure that they are available to the public. You can view:
